ACI Prensa Features Catholic Mass Times

“It is a concrete tool for drawing closer to God”

Catholic Mass Times is the ideal app for going to Mass when you are traveling: it locates the nearest Catholic church and shows its Mass times, whatever city you are in. ACI Prensa ran a story on it when the app passed two million downloads, and the most widely read Catholic news agency in the Spanish-speaking world, now EWTN News Español, paused on a question almost no other outlet had asked: where exactly does the information on the 125,000 churches it listed at the time come from?

The answer has three sources. The users themselves, who submit new churches and correct Mass times from within the app. Diocesan websites, where they exist. And Google Maps, for locations and contact details. A team then reviews every contribution before approving it. That cross-checking is what makes it possible to sustain something no institution maintains in a centralized way: a living census of the Catholic churches of the world and their Mass times.

The effort is easier to appreciate in light of a figure the agency itself highlights: of the 3,000 dioceses in the world, nearly 70% have no website. Across much of the planet, the app is the only source of up-to-date Mass times. Licheri saw this for himself when he checked what the app had for the Maldives, where he assumed he would find nothing. The app lists the country's only Mass, celebrated at the Italian consulate for foreigners who ask to attend.

Today the app gathers more than 138,000 churches and is available in forty languages, but the essentials remain the same: the service is free, shows no advertising, and stays alive thanks to those who contribute and to the donations of those who believe in it. Before you set off on a trip, you can look up the Mass, Confession, and Adoration times at your destination.
